Hopkins Day 2012 marks the 71st birthday of Hopkins though the celebrations didn’t start until 1990. Hopkins Day 2012 was wildly successful due to the efforts of the village council and volunteers.

Heiniken and Belikin lent 13 tents to provide shade for the festivities. The village council and volunteers built extra palapas for vendors. The layout of the tents allowed the majority of the beach to remain free for whichever games and events were taking place at the time.

Thanks to the media for giving us such great coverage, we had more people in the village than at any other time. BTB put articles in all the Belize newspapers and their website. Love FM, Hamalii Radio, Dangriga Vision, and BTIA National also did their share to publicize the event.

Thanks also to the many sponsors who made Hopkins day such a success. Bowen & Bowen for all the tents and shade, Hamanasi, Jaguar Reef, Sittee River Marina, Smart, Hopkins Bay Resort and Hopkins Harbour, Belizean Dreams, Beaches and Dreams, Villa Veranno, Jungle Jeannie, Innies, Tina’s Kitchen, Dong Lee, Hopkins Store, Happy Store, Siomara Restaurant, and Thongs, just to name a few. All support is greatly appreciated.

Friday night kicked off the opening ceremony festivities with music provided by DJ Crane. Bands providing for Saturday’s dance were Sweetain Band, Lloyd Reckless, and Jess Flores. They played until 4:00am.

Other activities on Saturday included a dance contest, greasy pole contest, children races and other games for the enjoyment of the crowd.

Sunday was family day. Many enjoyed the sea while others partook of the games provided for the kids along with the trampoline. A great time was had by all.

Humane Society

The Hopkins Belize Humane Society has had an extremely successful 2012 so far! The last clinic in June with Dr. Jessica Braun treated 126 animals in the Hopkins, Sittee River, Silk Grass, Maya Center and Dangriga area, and performed surgery on 32 animals.

We’ve had seven visiting veterinarians since the beginning of the year, and HBHS has treated over 1000 animals, and performed just over 450 surgeries in the first six months of 2012! We are so proud of the support we receive from local businesses and the people of our community. Thank you all for your continued assistance.

The next set of veterinary clinics will be in September, dates to be announced. Please remember the treatment clinics on Wednesdays from 1-3 with Joseph Morgan. If HBHS can help you, please call Joseph at 667-5432, or contact us at . Check out our Facebook page, too!
